Syed Jahangir, a Fine Arts graduate from the Govt. Institute of Art (Presently, Faculty of Fine Art, Dhaka University) in 1955. He started his career as a professional artist in the same year and continued to work as a free-lancer up to the end of 1977 when he took up a job at the Bangladesh Shilpakala Academy as Director, Department of Fine Arts. During these 22 years as a professional artist, Jahangir was prolific in producing water colors, oils and drawings. He participated in more than a hundred national and international group exhibitions and 38 individual exhibitions in India, Pakistan, Nepal, Hong Kong, Malaysia, China, Japan, Germany the USA, Kuwait, Soviet Union and Bangladesh. Connoisseurs from many countries of the world have collected more than nine thousand of his works individually and through institutions. In 1985, Jahangir was awarded “Ekushe Padak”( one of the highest National Awards of Bangladesh) for his outstanding contribution in the field of Fine Arts in Bangladesh. Besides, he was awarded a life time achievement award, Shilpacharya Zainul Abedin award, Michel Modhushudan award, S. M. Sultan gold medal and many others.
